When trying for a baby feels like a chore: keeping intimacy loving

If your fertile window has started to feel mechanical, here are practical, gentle ways to bring warmth, playfulness and real connection back into intimacy this week.

“Tonight's the night” used to sound romantic. Now, for many couples trying to conceive, it can sound more like a work rota. Ovulation test positive, calendar says go, and suddenly intimacy feels like an appointment you both have to keep. If that is how your fertile window has started to feel, you are far from alone, and there are ways to bring the love back.

Why it happens

When intimacy has a goal, it is easy to lose the joy of it. A few common reasons it starts to feel mechanical:

  • Scheduling takes away spontaneity.
  • Disappointment from previous months hangs in the air.
  • One of you feels pressure to perform, which can affect desire or arousal.
  • You are both tired, especially if work is busy or you have other children.
  • It feels as though your bodies are being used for a purpose rather than enjoyed.

None of this means your marriage is failing. It means you are human, and trying to conceive is hard.

Practical ways to keep it loving

Don't announce every fertile day

Some couples find it helps if the wife quietly tracks the fertile window and simply initiates intimacy without announcing that it is “time”. Others prefer to be open. Talk together about what works for you.

Start earlier in the evening

Leaving intimacy until you are both exhausted at midnight rarely makes it feel loving. Have dinner together, put phones away, and give yourselves time to connect first.

Bring back the build-up

Holding hands, kissing, compliments, a long hug at the door, a message during the day saying you're looking forward to seeing each other. These small things set the tone.

Change the setting

Light a candle, put on music you both like, freshen the bedding. A little effort signals that this is about the two of you, not just a task.

Laugh

Trying to conceive can make everything feel very serious. It is all right to be playful, to laugh at the awkwardness, and to remember you are friends as well as partners.

Have some nights off

If you are both drained, skipping a night will not undo everything. Equally, having intimacy outside the fertile window, just because you want to, reminds you both that it is about love.

If one of you is struggling

Pressure can affect desire and arousal for both men and women. It is common and usually temporary. Be gentle with each other, avoid blame, and talk about it outside the bedroom when you are both calm. If difficulties continue, or intimacy is painful, please see your doctor. These are very common issues and there is help available.

Loved as you are

The Song of Solomon is a whole book of the Bible celebrating love between husband and wife. It speaks of desire, delight and devotion, not schedules. In one place, the husband says to his bride:

“Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.” (Song of Solomon 4:7, KJV)

This is how love sees. Not as a body with a job to do, but as someone wholly beautiful and cherished. You are more than your fertility, and your husband is more than a route to a baby. You are beloved to each other.

Later, the same book describes the strength of real love:

“Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.” (Song of Solomon 8:7, KJV)

The floods of disappointment, pressure and waiting do not have to drown your love. It can grow stronger through this season, not weaker.

A simple plan for this fertile window

  1. Talk first. Before the window starts, agree how you will approach it this month.
  2. Plan one proper date in the middle of the window, with dinner, conversation and no talk of conceiving.
  3. Keep affection going on the in-between days, with cuddles, kind words and small gestures.
  4. Check in afterwards. Ask each other, “How did this week feel for you?” and listen.
  5. Pray together for your marriage, not just for a baby.

A prayer for our closeness

Lord, thank You for the gift of intimacy in our marriage. Keep it tender and joyful, not pressured or mechanical. Help us to delight in each other as You delight in us, and let our love grow stronger through this season. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal for sex to feel like a chore when trying to conceive?

Yes, it is very common. Scheduling, pressure and disappointment can take the joy out of it. Talking openly and focusing on connection can help.

What if my husband struggles with performance pressure during ovulation?

This is common and usually temporary. Avoid blame, reduce pressure and talk calmly outside the bedroom. If it continues, he can speak to his doctor.
