You are in your fertile window, or very close to it. This is the part of your cycle when conception is possible, and it can come with a lot of questions and a fair bit of pressure. Let's take the mystery out of it. Knowing the basics can help you feel calmer, more confident and more able to enjoy this time rather than dread it.

What is the fertile window?

The fertile window is the handful of days in each cycle when intimacy could lead to pregnancy. It is generally understood to be about six days long: the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.

Why six days? It comes down to two simple facts:

  • Sperm can survive in the body for up to about five days when fertile cervical mucus is present.
  • An egg survives for only around 12 to 24 hours after it is released at ovulation.

So sperm that are already waiting when the egg is released have a good chance of meeting it. That is why the days leading up to ovulation matter just as much as ovulation day itself, and often more.

Which days are the most fertile?

The two or three days before ovulation, and the day of ovulation, are usually thought to be the most fertile. These are often the days when you notice the wettest, most slippery, stretchy cervical mucus, and when ovulation tests turn positive.

How do I know when I'm ovulating?

No method is perfect, but these signs can help:

  • Cervical mucus that is clear, wet and stretchy like raw egg white.
  • A positive ovulation test, which suggests ovulation will probably happen within the next day or so.
  • A slight rise in morning temperature that stays up, which confirms ovulation has already happened.
  • A twinge or ache on one side of your lower tummy for some women.
  • Feeling more interested in intimacy, which is your body's natural design at work.

How often should we try?

For most couples, intimacy every day or every other day during the fertile window gives good chances. You don't need to do more than that, and you don't need to hit one exact day. If your fertile window is hard to pin down, intimacy every two to three days throughout the whole cycle also covers it well and can feel less pressured.

Many couples find it helps to start a little earlier than they think, rather than waiting for a positive ovulation test, since the days before ovulation are so valuable.

Simple things that can help

  • Choose lubricant carefully. Some ordinary lubricants can make it harder for sperm to move. If you need one, look for a product labelled as fertility-friendly or sperm-friendly.
  • Keep it relaxed. There is no need for special positions or acrobatics. Whatever feels comfortable and loving is fine.
  • Rest afterwards if you like, but there is no need to lie with your legs in the air. Most sperm that are going to make the journey do so quickly.
  • Look after your sleep. Being exhausted makes everything harder. Early nights help.

What if we miss a day?

Please don't panic. Because sperm can live for several days, a missed day rarely ruins a cycle. And even with perfect timing, conception often takes several cycles for healthy couples. One imperfect week is not a failure.

When to seek advice

See your doctor if you have been trying for twelve months, or six months if you are 35 or over. Go sooner if your cycles are irregular, you rarely see signs of ovulation, intimacy is painful, or either of you has any concerns about your health.

He gives His beloved rest

It is easy to feel that everything depends on getting the timing exactly right. But you are not the one holding the universe together. A psalm about building a home and family says this:

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:2, KJV)

You can do your part with care and then rest. Anxious striving will not add to the outcome, but rest is a gift God gives freely to those He loves. Do what you can this week, and then lay your head down in peace.

A prayer for your fertile window

Lord, thank You for the way You made our bodies. Help us to understand them without being ruled by them. As we do our part this week, give us peace, joy in each other and the sweet sleep You give to Your beloved. Amen.
