Dedicating your baby to God: questions and gentle answers

Thinking about dedicating your baby, before or after birth? Simple answers on what dedication means, how families in different churches mark it, and ideas to start now.

Long before a baby arrives, many Christian parents feel a quiet longing to place their child in God's hands. You might be thinking about a service at church after the birth, or wondering whether you can do something meaningful now, while your baby is still inside you. Here are some common questions, answered simply.

What does it mean to dedicate a baby?

At its heart, dedicating a child means saying, before God and often before others: This child is a gift from you. We entrust them to you, and we promise to raise them with love and point them towards you. It is as much about the parents' commitment as it is about the baby.

Different churches mark this in different ways. Some hold a dedication or thanksgiving service. Others practise infant baptism or christening. Others celebrate a naming ceremony with prayer. Your own church tradition will guide what this looks like for your family, and your minister or pastor will be glad to talk it through with you.

Can I dedicate my baby while I am still pregnant?

Many mums and families do pray a prayer of dedication during pregnancy. It is not a replacement for anything your church does after birth; it is simply a way of beginning as you mean to go on. There are no rules about when or how. Some ideas:

  • A quiet moment at home with your husband or partner, or with a close friend, laying hands on the bump and praying together.
  • Asking your pastor, a church leader or older Christian friend to pray a blessing over you and your baby.
  • Writing a letter to your baby that includes a prayer of dedication, to give them one day.
  • Choosing a verse or blessing to pray over your baby regularly.

Is there a biblical example?

Yes. Hannah brought her young son Samuel to the house of the Lord and spoke of lending him to God for his whole life. Mary and Joseph took the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. In both stories, parents openly gave thanks for their child and committed him to God's care.

What words could I use?

You can use your own words, or borrow ancient ones. One of the oldest blessings in Scripture is the one given to Aaron and his sons to speak over the people:

The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

Many parents pray this blessing over their children at bedtime for years. You could start now, with your hand on your bump.

What if my partner or family do not share my faith?

That is a common situation and nothing to be ashamed of. You can still pray for and bless your baby in your own quiet way. If you would like a church dedication or baptism, talk honestly and respectfully with your partner about what it would mean, and speak to your church leader about your circumstances. Your love and prayers are never wasted.

What if I am worried something might go wrong?

Some mums, especially after a previous loss, feel nervous about dedicating a baby they are afraid to hope for. Please be gentle with yourself. Dedication is not a bargain with God or a guarantee. It is an expression of love and trust, and it can be as small and private as a whispered Lord, this little one is yours. Whatever happens, your baby is known and held by God.

Alongside prayer, keep caring for your body: attend your appointments and contact your midwife or maternity unit if you have bleeding, pain, fluid leaking, or a change in your baby's movements later in pregnancy.

How can we plan a dedication after birth?

  1. Talk to your church early. Ask what they offer, how often, and whether there is any preparation.
  2. Give yourself time. There is no rush. Recovery, feeding and sleep come first in those early weeks.
  3. Think about who will stand with you. Many traditions involve godparents, sponsors or a supporting family. Choose people who will pray for your child for years.
  4. Keep it meaningful, not stressful. A simple meal with family afterwards is plenty.

A prayer of dedication

Lord, this child is your gift, and I place them in your hands today. Bless them and keep them, make your face shine upon them, and give them peace. Help me to love them well and to show them your love all their days. Amen.
